Carlsbad Residence

A contemporary hillside remodel overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this project choreographs arrival as a spatial and sensory experience. Floating stairs ascend the steep terrain, guiding guests through a landscape of native and adaptive plantings that honor the region’s chaparral ecology while thoughtfully preserving the spirit of the home’s original Japanese garden. At the summit, a slender bridge crosses a reflective water feature, creating a moment of pause before entry. Within the home’s courtyard, a hidden garden is revealed, anchored by graceful Ginkgo trees and complemented by a custom outdoor kitchen and a built-in hot tub, offering an intimate retreat that balances modern living with quiet reverence for landscape and place.
